I've seen a lot of confused, borderline conspiratorial takes floating around, so let me explain what's actually going on in plain English, and why you can almost certainly relax.
First, what it is NOT
Let's kill the scary version right away. This watermark is not a secret character hidden in your text. It's not a tracking pixel. It's not some sneaky metadata tag or a hidden user ID whispering "Joe wrote this with Claude" to anyone who looks. None of that. Nobody is stamping your name on anything.
What an AI actually does
To get what the watermark really is, you need the world's fastest explanation of how these models work. When you boil an AI language model all the way down, it's fancy autocomplete. (I went deep on this in another post, but that's the gist.)
Here's the whole idea. Say you ask Claude to finish the sentence: "The weather today was cold and ___." It picks the next word. Maybe "gray." Maybe "overcast." It's constantly making tiny choices exactly like that, one word at a time, all the way through.
And normally there's some built-in randomness to those choices. If you ran that same sentence 100 times, you might get "gray" 70 times, "overcast" 20 times, and a scattering of other words the rest. Not identical every run. A little roll of the dice at each step.
So what's the watermark?
The watermark is simply a subtle, deliberate thumb on the scale. Every time the model picks its next word, it nudges those odds in a specific, pre-decided pattern. Not enough to change what the text means or how it reads, just enough to leave a faint statistical fingerprint in the choices themselves.
In a single sentence, that fingerprint is invisible and meaningless. But run it across a long document, say a 30-page research paper you are definitely, totally not plagiarizing, and those tiny nudges pile up into a pattern that wouldn't occur naturally.
Think of a coin. Flip heads once? Means nothing. Twice? Still shrug-worthy. But flip a coin 500 times and get 400 heads, and now something is clearly going on. That's the watermark. It isn't any single word, it's the statistically loaded pattern across thousands of them.

And to the college students sweating right now: relax. In practice, detecting this reliably takes real tools and real effort, and I have my doubts the average professor is running that analysis on your term paper.
I say this as a man with a checkered academic past. Fun fact: as a 20-year-old undergrad, at a completely different school and back during the pandemic, I was doing a chemistry titration that was supposed to turn the solution pink. I could not get it to turn pink to save my life. So I diluted some red Gatorade with water, submitted that, and got a 100. If a chem professor couldn't catch Gatorade, I wouldn't bet the farm on widespread detection of a subtle statistical watermark.
