How to Get Found by AI

How to Get Found by AI

For twenty years, getting found meant clawing up Google. Now your customers ask ChatGPT "who's the best company near me?" and take the robot's word for it. So how do you get the AI to recommend YOU? It's a checklist, not magic: leave the robots a note (an llm.txt file they actually read), answer real FAQs, blog constantly (our Rank agent drives 78% more views), get mentioned across Reddit and news sites, and speak in hard numbers instead of empty praise. And it's worth it, leads convert at 14.2% from AI search vs 7.5% from Google ads and 2.8% from organic. The robots are handing out recommendations. Make sure they've got yours.

For twenty years, "getting found" meant one thing: clawing your way up Google. Now your customers are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot "who's the best paver sealing company near me?" and taking the robot's answer as gospel. So the real question in 2026 is simple: when someone asks an AI about your line of work, does it recommend you, or does it recommend the other guy?

Good news. Getting the robots to like you isn't magic. Here's exactly how to do it, and yes, we do all of this for our clients.

1. Leave the robots a note (llm.txt)

An llm.txt is a plain-language cheat sheet you leave at the door for the AI.

Start with a file called llm.txt. In plain English, it's a little note you leave on your website specifically for AI to read. The robots from OpenAI, Microsoft, and the rest actively grab that file and use it to understand what you do. Think of it as a cheat sheet you hand the AI so it doesn't have to guess.

It's just a short, clear description of your business. For a paver sealing company in Brevard County, like Atlantic Exteriors, it would say something like: owner-operated paver sealing company serving Brevard County, 15 years of experience, and so on. There's also an llm-full.txt, which is just a longer, more detailed version of the same thing. Two files, and suddenly the AI actually knows who you are.

2. Answer the questions people actually ask (FAQs)

Add a real FAQ section, the frequently asked questions your customers always call about. "How much does it cost?" "How long does it take?" "Do you offer free quotes?"

Here's the reassuring part: this is the same best practice Google has rewarded for years. A lot of the underlying technology isn't that different, so the work you do to please AI also helps you in regular search. FAQs give the AI clean, direct answers it can lift and hand straight to the person asking. Make its job easy and it'll reward you.

3. Blog. Constantly.

The more useful, specific content you publish, the more surface area the AI has to find and quote you. A blog post that answers "how often should I reseal my pavers?" is exactly the kind of thing an AI loves to pull from.

This is why we built Rank, our AI blogging agent, which writes and publishes these posts automatically. We built the website for Atlantic Exteriors, and they run Rank on it. And it's not a hunch. When we analyzed our own portfolio, the websites with blogs pulled in 78% more views than the ones without. Not 78% more "engagement" or some fuzzy metric. Views. Real eyeballs.

4. Understand why this is worth it

Three-bar chart of lead conversion rates: AI search 14.2 percent, Google Ads 7.5 percent, Google organic 2.8 percent, headline reading Where Leads Actually Come From
People arriving from an AI answer convert dramatically better than search traffic.

Here's the number that should get your attention. The share of people who actually turn into leads breaks down like this: 14.2% from AI searches (ChatGPT, Perplexity, pick your poison), 7.5% from Google ads, and just 2.8% from Google organic results.

Do the math and AI-driven traffic converts anywhere from about 2x to 7x better than Google, depending on how you slice it. That's right in the same league as Facebook, which, if you read my piece on why Google Pay-Per-Click is dead, you know I'm very bullish on. People who arrive from an AI recommendation show up warmer and readier to buy, because a machine they trust just vouched for you.

5. Get mentioned everywhere else

A business name appearing across Reddit, a news article, and a review site while an AI robot connects the dots, headline reading Get Mentioned Everywhere
Every mention on another site is another place the AI can find and trust you.

The AI doesn't just read your site. It reads the whole internet. So the more other places mention you, the more the robots trust you exist and matter. Get talked about on Reddit. Land a mention in a local news article. Show up on review sites and directories.

Every one of those is another breadcrumb leading the AI back to you. One website saying you're great is a claim. Ten websites mentioning you is a pattern, and AI runs on patterns.

6. Use real numbers, not praise

This is the one almost everyone gets wrong, so lean in. AI is deeply unimpressed by adjectives. "We're the best, most trusted, highest-quality provider" is noise it's seen a billion times. It means nothing.

Concrete numbers are what it grabs onto. Notice what I did earlier: I didn't say "Rank gets you way more views." I said 78% more views across our portfolio. That specific figure gives the AI something solid to hook into and repeat. So everywhere you can, trade the fluffy praise for a real stat. "15 years in business." "Over 2,000 driveways sealed." "Same-week quotes." Numbers are the language the robots actually speak.

The takeaway

Getting found by AI isn't mystical, it's a checklist. Leave the robots a note, answer the real questions, blog like it's your job, get mentioned around the web, and speak in hard numbers instead of empty praise. The businesses that do this now are going to own the answer box while everyone else is still wondering why the phone stopped ringing.

The robots are handing out recommendations. Make sure they've got yours.
