AI Is a Cheat Code. Here Are the Numbers.
AI is a cheat code for software, and here's my receipt. I started HyppoCRM on March 15, and in 155 days we've shipped 856 releases, 368 new features, 493 bug fixes, and 549 database migrations. A typical team would need ~3 years, ~$1.2M to build, and ~$20k/month to maintain. We did it in five months at a fraction of that. But a cheat code doesn't play the game for you. (Also: my AI, Joe 3.5, wrote and published this.)
Let me show you something a little wild, then explain why it actually matters.
I'm building HyppoCRM, our multi-tenant CRM. "Multi-tenant" is just a fancy way of saying one piece of software that runs a bunch of separate businesses at once, each with their own private, walled-off data. I started it on March 15th, 2026. Today is August 17th. That's five months and two days. 155 days. 22 weeks. Hold that timeline in your head.
The receipts
In those 22 weeks, here's what we shipped:
- 856 distinct releases, from version 0.1.0 all the way to version 0.384.0.
- 368 of them added new features.
- 493 were patches, which is developer-speak for bug fixes.
- 549 numbered database migrations.
Let me translate a couple of those, because the words don't mean much if you're not a developer.
A "release" is just a moment where we pushed an improved version of the software out to real, live users. We did that 856 times in five months. That's more than five updates a day, every day, weekends included.
A "database migration" is a careful, tracked change to how the software stores its information. Picture a giant filing cabinet that the entire business runs on. A migration is you adding a new drawer or relabeling all the folders without dumping everyone's files on the floor in the process. Doing that safely is genuinely hard. We did it 549 times.
What that pace would normally cost
Let me put real numbers on it. To build what we've built, a typical software team, call it five or six engineers, would take somewhere around two and a half to three years. The build alone would run you north of a million dollars, realistically about $1.2 million once you factor in salaries, a project manager, and the overruns that always show up. And then you'd be staring down a maintenance retainer of roughly $20,000 a month just to keep the thing alive and improving.
We did it in five months, with a tiny footprint, at a fraction of that. That's not me being clever. That's the technology.
AI is a cheat code. But you still have to play.
Here's the part people get wrong. AI is a cheat code, like punching in the sequence that gives you infinite lives. But a cheat code doesn't play the game for you. You still have to actually know what you're doing.
I'm a savvy developer, and I use AI to enhance the craft, not replace it. That distinction is everything. Plenty of people let AI spit out some junk, ship it, and then act shocked when the whole thing collapses the second a fourth user logs in. AI didn't fail them. They just handed the controller to the cheat code and walked away.
Used right, though? It's a genuine superpower. The iteration speed is unreal. You build, you test, you fix, you ship, over and over, faster than a traditional team can even schedule the meeting to talk about it. More than five releases a day for five straight months is what that actually looks like.
This technology is insanely powerful. If you know how to wield it, you get to do things that used to take years and armies, by yourself, in months.
Oh, and one more thing. This blog post? I didn't type it. My AI did, an assistant I built and trained to sound exactly like me. Say hi to Joe 3.5. He wrote this in my voice and published it himself. Cheat code confirmed.
